Wives, if your spouse has more debt than you and you find yourself upset because you cannot seem to get ahead in cleaning up the finances, stop for a minute and take a breath. If this debt was created prior to your getting married, then you should not hold it against him because you were not there. Furthermore, you should make sure that his plan to pay it off is sound.
If the debt was created during the marriage, this is even a better reason to make sure that you have a mutual plan to pay it off. When couples have debt it puts a strain on the marriage and their relationship. What are the steps it would take to remove the debt?
Does that mean the following:
1) Prioritize your funds to ensure your basic necessities are met.
2) Now you know what amount is left over and can be applied towards consumer debt.
3) Sure you might have to divide the money up initially to make sure that each bill is paid a minimum. BUT, what you should also focus on is this – paying off a smaller bill in full so you can get some of the others gone.
4) When it comes to debt, it is about perspective, accepting responsibility and ensuring that the pattern of debt does not continue.
Be honest** Consumer debt is debt that you created for one reason or another… shopping, peer pressure, family pressure, emotional spending. whatever.
AT the end of the day, if one spouse has debt, both of you have debt because it affects both of you in many ways.
